Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare, renewed permission of Government Dental College and Research Institute, Ballari, to admit 50 students for the first year for the current academic year (2016-17).

The Union government had denied permission for the intake of a batch of 50 students during the previous academic year (2015-16) quoting inadequate infrastructure facilities, including teaching staff and equipments.

The denial was based on a report of a team from DCI.

Official sources told The Hindu that steps were taken to comply with almost all the deficiencies observed by the DCI team during its visit in 2015 and a report was also sent, seeking renewal of permission.

Later, teams from DCI visited the college twice, in April and May this year, inspected the facilities made available and recommended for renewal of permission, sources added.

After that a communication with regard to renewal of permission has been sent by Pradip Kumar Pal, Under Secretary to the Union government.

The communication states that the renewal of permission for intake of 50 students for the first year of Bachelor of Dental Science (B.D.S) course was only for the current academic year.

It added that before admitting the next batch of 50 students, the college should get recognition from the Dental Council of India (DCI)).

The college, the second in the State run by the State government, has been functioning with an intake of 50 students, since 2008. It is yet to get the recognition from the DCI and has been functioning based on the permission from the Union government.

The college will be able to take in 50 students for the current academic year for B.D.S
