The miscreants also made away with cash and gold jewellery

A secluded farmhouse on the outskirts of Hunsur was targeted by miscreants, who assaulted a couple and made away with gold jewellery and cash, on Saturday night.

The couple — Balagopal (55) and Nagarathna (48)— residing in the farmhouse were rushed to Government Hospital in Hunsur before being shifted to a private hospital in Mysuru.

While Ms. Nagarathna is out of danger, the condition of Mr. Balagopal, who was repeatedly hit by a blunt iron rod on the head, is considered to be critical.

The police, however, have booked a case and are probing.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Hunsur, Harish Pande told The Hindu that the attack had taken place between 8.15 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. on Saturday, which was fairly early for such a crime.

The police suspect that the miscreants had studied the situation, including the secluded location of the farmhouse and the number of people passing by the road, before carrying out the attack.

“It seems to a professional gang. We are investigating the matter,” he said.

According to Ms. Nagarathna, there were only two persons who entered the house and threw chilli powder in their eyes before attacking them. While Mr. Balagopal bore the brunt of the attack, Mr. Nagarathna swooned immediately after receiving the first few blows, the police said.

The miscreants took away a gold necklace weighing 40 gm, three pairs of ear rings and other jewellery, besides Rs. 8,000 in cash, all valued around Rs. 1.2 lakh.

The women recovered her senses minutes after the miscreants had left the house and alerted her relatives, who rushed them to the hospital.

The couple lived alone in the farmhouse as their children worked in Bengaluru, the police added.
