‘Civil society pledges support to bandh call’

September 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 28, 2016 03:32 pm IST - MYSURU:

Kurubur Shanthkumar, president of the Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers Association, on Friday claimed that around 36 organisations in Mysuru have voluntarily supported the Karnataka bandh call on Saturday to highlight the plight of farmers.

“The organisations have agreed to lend their support for the bandh. The response from the civil society was overwhelming and we hope similar support even in other parts of the State,” he told reporters here.

A massive rally will be taken out from Kote Anjaneyaswamy Temple and representatives from various organisations and those who support farmers will participate, besides growers from across the district, he said.

Hitting out at the State government for not responding favourably to farmers’ problems, Mr. Shanthkumar said farmers were in a difficult situation with mounting debt and drought. “Instead of focusing on solutions, it was busy trying to capture power at the BBMP,” he lamented.

He also hit out at the Narendra Modi government for announcing a package for Bihar keeping in view the forthcoming elections.
