Chief Minister urged to intervene in Tata Marcopolo-workers issue

Jagadish Shettar says unit was compelled to suspend operations

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Jagadish Shettar has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to intervene in the Tata Marcopolo-workers labour issue in Dharwad.

Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Shettar said that Tata Marcopolo manufacturing unit in Dharwad has suspended operations. The unit was compelled to take such a hasty decision due to some issues involving trade unions.

However, the State government appears least bothered about the development, he said.

Mr. Siddaramaiah should direct the district administration to look into the matter and ensure that the unit resumed operation, he said.

4,000 people affected

Mr. Shettar said that nearly 4,000 people have been rendered jobless and several ancillary units too are suffering. Dharwad had already lost a major industrial project from Hero Motors.

If the same situation continues, Dharwad would become another Davangere which had lost the tag of being an industrial hub as most of the manufacturing units were shutdown over the years, he said.

Hero Motors’
