Belur Town Municipal Council (TMC) president T.A. Srinidhi and several other TMC members participated in a lunch organised at a municipal worker’s residence in the town to mark World Environment Day in Belur on Sunday. The TMC president and members chose to observe the day in the municipal workers’ colony keeping in mind the view that municipal workers play a major role in keeping the town environment clean.

The TMC members had lunch with the family members of Sharadamma. They had ragi mudde and soppu saru (curry made of green vegetables). Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Srinidhi said the lunch was organised to mark the World Environment Day. “The municipal workers have been working hard, despite their own difficulties, to keep the city clean. The public hardly recognises their work. We thought of observing the day with them and listening to their problems,” he said.

The TMC will soon discuss issues related to the distribution of letters of rights over the houses the workers have been living in, besides providing them other benefits utilising the 22.75 per cent funds of the council, Mr. Srinidhi said. The benefits would include better health facilities, quality education for their children and financial assistance to have better houses.
