The Chamarajanagar Session Court Judge Lakshman F. Malavalli on Monday sentenced a man to three years in jail for causing the death of a bear due to illegal electrification of a fence around his land in October 2010.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 1,000 on him.

The man has been identified as Mahadevappachari, a native of Hosapura, Gundlupet taluk. The police had filed a charge sheet following a complaint lodged by the Forest Department.

According to sources, CHESCOM officials had said before the court that Mahadevappachari had drawn illegal power to electrify his fence to protect his standing crop from animals.
