Accused in murder case shot at, killed

An accused in a murder case, Sabir Patel (45), was shot at and killed near Godavari Hotel on Athani Road here at around 5.30 p.m. on Friday.

This is the second such case in less than a year in the city after the murder of Fayaz Mushrif, a nephew of corporator Sajjadepeeran Mushrif.

Fayaz Mushrif was shot dead at point-blank range on November 7 last year.

Sabir Patel, who was one of the dozen accused in the Fayaz Mushrif murder case and was in jail, was out on bail three days ago.

His younger brother, Baba Patel, who was one of the accused in the same case, had secured bail about a week ago.

According to the police, two unknown assailants, possibly following the victim, first shot at Sabir Patel who was reportedly riding a motorcycle alone.

The assailants later assaulted him with sharp objects and chopped off his left arm.

Motive not clear

Though clear details about the motive and those involved the murder are yet to emerge, enmity and revenge are believed to the reason for the attack. However, only a through investigation would help reveal details.

Meanwhile, the police said that they are investigating the case and are also trying to check CCTV footages installed near the site.

The body was sent to the government hospital for autopsy.

A large number of policemen were deployed outside the house of Fayaz Mushrif at Haveli Galli in the city.

Gandhi Chowk police have registered a case.
