The Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun has demoted 16 Gentlemen Cadets (GC) for improper conduct, including manhandling of juniors.

The incident which happened in April first week includes beating the juniors as well as taking objectionable photographs. An officer said there was certain level of mentoring done by seniors as a practice during which some manhandling had happened.

'Against discipline'

“This is against the discipline of the academy and so they were relegated to the junior course,” the officer said.

Relegation means demotion to the next junior level which means the GCs belonging to the Spring 2016 batch have to now repeat another six months.

On the impact the punishment would have on the career, the officer said: “The implications will not be realised now but later during promotions at a senior level where seniority matters.”
