The Kalaburagi Bench of the High Court of Karnataka rejected the bail application of two Kerala-based nursing students arrested in connection with a ragging incident in a local nursing college in which another student from Kerala was allegedly forced to consume toilet cleaner.
Serious issueJustice R.B. Budhihal who heard the bail applications of the students, Athira and Lakshmi, lodged in the central prison in Kalaburagi city, rejected them taking into account the seriousness of the charge and on the ground that the investigation was yet to be completed. The judge also noted that the fourth accused, Shilpa Jose, was still absconding. Public Prosecutor Prakash Yeli opposed the bail application filed by the students.
Bail for another accusedOn July 8, the second additional sessions judge M. Premavathi had granted bail to another accused nursing student, Krishna Priya, in the case and rejected the bail application of both Athira and Lakshmi and remanded them to judicial custody.
The incident which sent shock waves took place on May 9 in Al Qamar Nursing college hostel in Kalaburagi. The victim, K.P. Aswathy, was initially admitted in the Bahamani Hospital and later shifted to Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital. Against medical advice, the girl got discharged and the hostel authorities sent her back to her native place in Kerala.
