The Chittoor police administration has deployed four special police teams to curb the inter-State crime in several towns and villages in the western and eastern mandals of the district bordering with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, particularly the 120-km long national highway from Chittoor to Kuppam.
Speaking to The Hindu , Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) T. Annapurna Reddy said owing to the presence of special crime parties at Palamaner, Madanapalle, Puttur and Chittoor police sub divisions, the crime rate had come down considerably in the district’s heartland.
However, the issue had to be tackled in the border areas, with several incidents of vehicle-lifting, chain-snatching and highway robberies being reported.
“In recent months, we managed to bust a few inter-State criminal gangs, in coordination with the police from the neighbouring States,” she said.
The ASP said bank authorities, petrol pumps owners, and highway dhabas were instructed to compulsorily install CC TV cameras on their premises to monitor the movement of suspicious elements.
For foolproof surveillance, they were advised to arrange alternative recording at remote locations to negate the possibility of criminal gangs tampering with the digital equipment. Highway patrolling and checking of vehicles at the border posts was intensified with multi-functional mobile teams, she said.
The ASP said in order to achieve the best results, the police personnel attached to crime parties were made to coordinate their operations with other special teams through Whats App grouping. Periodical training camps for the crime sleuths in latest software applications and people-friendly policing were initiated, she pointed out.
