More than 100 leaders of various opposition parties have been rounded up so far as the combined opposition enforced a bandh in the district pressing for special category status to the state.

At Guntur, several YSRCP leaders were taken into preventive custody. Ambati Rambabu, spokesperson of the party was taken into custody at Sattenapalli and in Guntur supporters led by Guntur East MLA Sk. Mustafa, Lella Appireddy stopped buses from leaving the NTR Bus Station Complex.

Superintendent of Police, Guntur Urban, Sarva Sresth Tripathi said on Saturday that no untoward incident has been reported in the urban police limits so far. Station House Inspectors of various police stations have been instructed to watch out for any incident. Armed police personnel have been stationed at all major junctions, railway station, RTC Bus Stand etc. More than 100 leaders have been rounded up.

Normal life across the district was severely paralysed as a combined opposition was enforcing a bandh pressing for a special category status. Schools, colleges, shops and hotels remained closed.

The busy Sankar Vilas Centre in the town wore a deserted look as shops, commercial establishments, hotels closed down voluntarily.

RTC services were being restored partially from 11 am, said RTC Regional Manager G. Srihari. ``We are operating 68 out of 835 bus services across the region and from 11 am, normalcy is being restored. Buses are plying on Guntur – Vijayawada national highway too,’’ the RM said.

But the ruling Telugu Desam has also launched a counter agitation with the leaders consecrating the statues of national leaders, Mahatma Gandhi with milk.
