District Muslim Minorities Welfare Association general secretary M. Afzal Khan on Tuesday urged Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to take immediate steps to protect the Wakf properties in Chittoor district from encroachments.
Speaking to the media here, Mr. Afzal Khan deplored that though the number of Wakf properties in Chittoor district is 6,900 as many as 5,500 acres of land had been encroached. In district headquarters Chittoor alone, over 290 acres were subjected to encroachment.
He alleged that though a local Telugu Desam leader had grabbed Wakf land adjoining Shesha Peeran Mosque in Chittoor, there was no response from the district authorities in spite of repeated appeals by the Wakf Board authorities.
He said that Wakf Board Chief Executive Officer L. Abdul Khadir had written to the Collector and Superintendent of Police (Chittoor) to initiate steps to stop registration of Wakf properties.
The Minorities forum leader said that there were no regular officials in Wakf Board in Chittoor, but run by staff on outsourcing basis, leading to irregularities.
Mr. Afzal Khan said that a district-wide protest would be launched shortly to create awareness among the Muslims for protection of Wakf properties.

Meanwhile, he urged the Chief Minister to take steps for release the pending budgetary allocation of Rs. 780 crore for the minorities welfare since 2014.
