Misuse of funds in Yanam alleged

June 18, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 12:57 pm IST - YANAM:

Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi is going to visit the Union Enclave Yanam in September to get firsthand information about the prevailing problems in the town located about 800 km from its headquarters.

A team of representatives from the NR Congress Party’s Yanam unit headed by the unit’s president and general secretary Velaga Rajeswara Rao and P. Vishnumurthy, respectively, have called on the new Lieutenant Governor at the Raj Bhavan and submitted a detailed memorandum.

Speaking to the reporters here on Friday, the leaders said that they brought to the notice of Ms. Bedi about the irregularities taking place in the town with support from the local elected representative.

“We have submitted two separate memoranda seeking the establishment of Region Development Council headed by the Lieutenant Governor and with equal representation of the political leaders of both the ruling and the Opposition parties. Appointment of fulltime officers in place of the in-charges, new labour policy in favour of workers and removal of bogus voters from the electoral rolls are included in the memorandum,” they said.

Referring to the second one, they said that it was about the misappropriation of funds under various heads in the town. “We sought an inquiry by the CBI into the misappropriation of Rs. 19 crore allocated for the public works . Ms. Bedi responded positively and assured us that she would look into the issues,” the leaders said.
