Civil Supplies Minister Paritala Sunita on Wednesday inaugurated the State government scheme of selling Sona Masuri variety of rice at Rs 30 per kg.

The scheme, which was launched along with IT Minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy at the Rythu Bazaar in the town, will be kick started in seven other municipalities of the district simultaneously, on a pilot basis.

Speaking at a function, Ms. Sunita said the State government was taking all steps to ensure access of rightly priced foods to the people of the State and that new and innovative measures would also be initiated to make such foods available to as many people as possible.

The scheme, she said, was being implemented with the coordination of rice millers and mandi merchants in the district.

“Each ration card holder can avail 10 kgs of Sona Masuri rice at Rs 30 per kg”, said Ms. Sunita even as she added that the scheme would be replicated around the State in phases.

She suggested that vegetables at Rythu Bazaars should also be sold through mobile bazaars on vehicles at important junctions in respective towns so as to give people wider access to vegetables at cheaper rates.

She also directed the district officials to provide basic amenities to farmers and visitors at Rythu Bazaar and said that the State government would help them.
