Former Minister and MLC Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy on Friday underscored the need for tapping the potential of developing resorts and tourism spots on the islands located in the middle of dams and reservoirs in Nellore district.
Presiding over a public meeting held after the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a Community Health Centre at Venkatachalam, attended by Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, Mr. Reddy said that there was a beautiful island in the Kaligiri reservoir near Atmakur.
“If this island is turned into a picturesque tourist spot, it will become an attractive destination for tourists and picnickers,” said Mr. Reddy.
Mr. Reddy said that instead of spending Rs. 63 crore in bits and pieces on different tourist projects, the officials should focus on developing two or three viable tourist spots which would draw the attention of tourists in large numbers.
Mr. Reddy said that by virtue of its diversity, Nellore district has a huge potential in terms of natural and man-made tourist attractions such as lakes, ponds, reservoirs, dams and temples.
