An air of festive spirit has prevailed as the faithful observe the holy month of Ramzan. The roads leading from the NTR Bus Station Complex to Zinna Tower are dotted with numerous eateries serving the delicious “Haleem” — a lip-smacking delicacy made with a variety of ingredients. People from all walks of life savour it.
This year, the eateries have sprung up at many areas in Lakshmipuram, Chandramouli Nagar and on Pattabhipuram Road. Vacant spaces along the main roads have been leased out for 45 days. The faithful throng several mosques in the town with a hoary past.
The oldest, Pedda Masjid, tucked away in the narrow lane besides the King’s Hotel, still holds an aura and draws the faithful.
Built in 17th Century by Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb, it sits on a rectangular strip measuring two acres. The two tall and imposing minarets stand out while a spacious pool in the courtyard presents a pleasing spectacle.
Former corporator Sk. Babu says the mosque should be taken over by the Archaeological Survey of India and preserved.
