A court in Dhaka on Monday awarded death to Huji chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and seven others and life sentence to six for killing 10 people in bomb blasts during the Pahela Baishakh , Bengali New Year celebrations in 2001.
The long awaited verdict was pronounced by Judge Ruhul Amin of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, Dhaka.
Hannan and eight other leaders and activists of banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (Huji) are in custody. Tight security was maintained in and around the court premises when the judgment was delivered.
The blasts killed at least 10 people and injured 50 during the traditional Bangla New Year celebrations on April 14. 2001, at the Dhaka’s Ramna Batamul.
