Gunmen kill 2 policemen in Egypt

August 21, 2016 01:44 pm | Updated 01:45 pm IST - CAIRO:

Egypt’s state news agency says gunmen have shot and killed two policemen at a checkpoint north of Cairo.

MENA said another three police and two civilians were wounded in the attack early Sunday in the Nile Delta governorate of Menoufiya. No armed group immediately claimed the attack and the authorities said they were investigating.

Wave of attacks

Egypt saw a wave of attacks mainly targeting security forces after the military ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013. The violence has diminished in recent months, but an Islamic State affiliate still operates in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula.
