Hindu fisherman Rasraj Das (27) — accused of defaming the Kaaba in a Facebook post that triggered a series of communal attacks in October last year — has been freed from jail after about three months in prison.
Mr. Das, who was arrested on October 29, came out of the Brahmanbaria district jail on Tuesday after securing bail.
After months of investigations, police concluded that it was not Mr. Das who uploaded the objectionable photo. It was actually circulated by the owner of a local cyber cafe who was later arrested.
Referring to a forensic report, Mr. Das’s lawyer Nasir Mia said there was no evidence that he had posted any photograph. Mr. Das, on learning about the controversial post, had apologised to Muslims by telling that his account, reportedly operated by his friends, had been hacked.
Following the uploading of the photo, at least five temples were attacked and 100 Hindu homes vandalised.
