Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) has strongly condemned the ruling All India NR Congress for failing to get water from Cauvery River for the farmers of Karaikal which is considered as the rice bowl of Union Territory.

Accusing the ruling party of betraying the farmers of the Karaikal region, the Congress party charged the AINRC-led Government of stalling the growth of Karaikal by failing to get the due share of water at a crucial time.

State executive committee meeting of PPCC held under its president and MLA A.Namassivayam, All India Congress Committee general secretary V.Narayanasamy, Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader V. Vaithilingam, former Chief Ministers, former Ministers and several other party functionaries participated in the meeting.

Resolutions

The executive committee meeting also passed resolutions condemning various other “omissions and commissions” of the ruling party. Alleging that the government has been lethargic in disbursal of salaries to employees , the Congress party said the ruling party has not come forward to meet their genuine demands.

Recalling that the Congress brought the scheme of supplying bread and milk to school students , the executive committee alleged that the government has now stopped it but has also failed to pay salaries to the employees involved. The party also urged the Central and UT Governments to control the prices of essential commodities.

Mills closed

The Congress committee condemned the government for closing Anglo-French Textiles, Puducherry and Karaikal Jaiprakash Narain mills in Karaikal. “The government has scant regard for the welfare of employees of other mills such as Sudeshi and Bharathi and failed to pay salary arrears and pension benefits to the retirees.”

Slamming the government for not extending any reservation to differently- abled persons, the Congress warned of agitation. The Congress party alleged that the government has not shown any attention in releasing crop subsidy to sugarcane farmers or arrears for the supply of sugarcane to Lingareddipalayam Co-Operative Sugar Mills.

The Congress said the financial assistance and subsidy to the fishermen were yet to be disbursed and charged the government of diverting funds from sub-plan meant for Scheduled Caste Communities to other departments.

Alleging that government has not taken any step to construct flyover, bridge, link road to remove traffic snarls, the Congress party said several innocents lost their lives in road accidents due to the lethargic attitude of the government.

Warns of mass agitation

The party also warned of launching a mass agitation against the government if it does not take any contingent measure to reduce the traffic snarls in the city. The party said necessary steps would be taken to remove value added tax (VAT) which is collected from traders.
