Braving the summer heat, AIAMDK candidates on Saturday undertook a hectic campaign in every constituency of the Union Territory.

The party’s election wing secretary and former Minister P. Kannan went around areas in Raj Bhavan constituency where he is facing rival candidate former Education Minister K.Lakshiminarayanan of Congress party who was once his protege.

Addressing the crowds from a campaign vehicle on Mahatma Gandhi Road, Mr. Kannan devoted most of his speech launching a personal attack against opponents in Congress party and said all “traitors have joined together against him”.

Elaborating his achievements when he was a minister in the UT government, Mr. Kannan said he brought Goondas Act to control the anti-social elements with an iron hand.

‘Easily accessible’

Rubbishing a campaign of that he was authoritarian, he recalled that he was easily accessible when he was minister and proceeded on a padayatra to hear the grievances of public at their door steps. Mr. Kannan said over 90 per cent of government employees working now were engaged by him and also highlighted on how he gave employment opportunities to the youth in UT.

Meanwhile, AIADMK Legislature party Deputy leader A.Anbalagan did door-to-door canvassing for votes in his Uppalam constituency where he seeks re-election.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Anbalagan said people are expecting a change of government since erstwhile governments have not fulfilled the aspiration of the people fully. The NR Congress also failed to fulfil the promises made during last Assembly polls and yet again made the same promises for this election and has been grinding same old corn, he charged.

He added that Congress and ruling BJP at the Centre had no concern on the welfare of people. The growth of State had been pushed backwards and infrastructure facilities were poor.

“As far as we are concerned, the Congress and the NR Congress are the same. For example, the sitting Minister P.Rajavelu gives his own constituency to Congress candidate M.Kandasamy. They have tacit understanding,” said Mr. Anbalagan.

He alleged that though Chief Minister N.Rangasamy claimed that he did not give seats to the betrayers in his party, he himself encouraged other party people to defect by giving seats.

Stating that the majority of the people wanted the AIADMK to come to power, Mr. Anbalagan said the people would elect AIADMK candidates as they were qualified to become legislators and function in an efficient manner.
