Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meetings in government schools will be held once a month. The decision was taken at a meeting convened by Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi with government high school headmasters, headmistresses and higher secondary school principals at Raj Nivas on Monday.
The PTA meets will be held on the last day of every month. Interacting with the school heads, the Lieutenant Governor called for increasing involvement of parents through different activities. PTAs should be made interesting. “Everyone, including parents, teachers and principals, should play, sing and dance with the children,” she said.
Ms. Bedi expressed her concern over the lack of knowledge about national and international issues among Puducherry students. She instructed the schools to listen to AIR news in the morning and make students read national and international news at the time of assembly time in the morning. “This is the best way to link them with India,” she said.
Apart from this, they were directed to introduce a compulsory library period in all the government schools. She added that physical activities should also be mandatory in schools. The students should be allowed to play and teachers should join them. “Outdoor games will make students realise their full potential,” she added.
Education Minister R.Kamalakannan that the Education Department will soon bring changes in the system. The school will train the children to face the world and not just to score marks. “All the government schools will be strengthened in all aspects and the government is working towards it,” he said.
Exchange programme
An exchange programme for government school students of Puducherry has been planned. The Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi on Monday said that an exchange programme for the government schools of Puducherry and Delhi was on the pipeline.
“The students from Puducherry will be taken to Delhi in the month of November and December. The education department will work out the feasibility including how to book the bogies. The expenses will be borne by the government. The parents could also contribute if they can,” she said.
