June 28, 2014 12:24 pm | Updated 12:24 pm IST - PUDUCHERRY:

An altercation took place between police and cadres of Communist Party of India (Marxist) when the latter attempted to advance towards Raj Nivas on Friday.

The CPM cadres led by State unit secretary V. Perumal staged the demonstration demanding allocation of 25 per cent reservation to Puducherry students in all departments of Pondicherry Central University. Mr. Perumal said 870 acres land was allocated for establishment of the university in 1986. The then Government had given an assurance that students of Puducherry would get 25 per cent reservation in seats and also promised jobs to those who gave the land to the university.

However, the allotted quota was not released to students in the current academic year, he said and blamed the Vice-Chancellor Chandra Krishnamoorthy for breaching the promise. Chief Minister N.Rangasamy and Lieutenant Governor Virendra Kataria should intervene in this to obtain 25 per cent seats to the students of State, he added.

Around 75 of them courted arrest after the demonstration.
