The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday held street corner meetings to highlight the “anti-people policies” of the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre and the Congress government in the Union Territory.

Addressing a meeting near Perumal Koil Street, Puducherry unit secretary of CPI (M) R. Rajangam said the NDA government had failed to contain inflation and create more jobs.

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi were only fighting each other to consolidate their positions and not for any public cause. Both should use their power to solve the pressing problems confronted by the public, Mr. Rajangam said.

The medical college managements had failed to adhere to their commitment to part with 50 per cent of the seats to the government quota. The colleges have given only 283 seats to the quota instead of allotting 500, he said.

The government had also failed to persuade a private firm to make payments due to sugarcane farmers. The firms have to pay the farmers around Rs. 40 crore, he said.

Veteran CPI (M) leader T. Murugan said instead of solving the problems, the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister were engaged in an “ego battle.” He also criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party for fomenting communal tension. He urged the public to be on guard against communal forces.
