Pondicherry Central University has constituted a committee to probe a complaint of alleged discrimination of some students from Afghanistan studying in the Centre for South Asian Studies of UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute of South Asia Regional Cooperation (UMISARC).

A university official said the three-member committee is examining the complaint which was submitted in the form of an anonymous letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor in-charge Anisa Basheer Khan.

Meanwhile, the Students Federation of India (SFI) has condemned what has been termed the “shocking instance of institutional discrimination” in the university.

SFI Puducherry unit secretary A. Anand said the students, in their complaint to Mr. Khan and the university Registrar had alleged that they were socially alienated by the Head of the Department of UMISARC.

“This is another shocking instance of institutional discrimination practised in Pondicherry Central University. It is an indicator of the ill-treatment meted out to the students belonging to other nationalities. The students have complained of discrimination practised in the marking and grading processes and the denial of the scholarship,” he said.
