The former Member of Parliament and a senior functionary of the AIADMK P. Kannan on Sunday announced his resignation from the party.

Asked whether the decision was a fallout of the recent developments in the AIADMK in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, Mr. Kannan said: “It is obvious. I don’t want to elaborate.” He declined to say what his future plan was and said that he would make an announcement at the appropriate time.

Disgruntled with the Congress, Mr. Kannan joined the AIADMK in February 2016, months ahead of the Assembly elections and was appointed as election wing secretary of the party.

However, in the 2016 elections, Mr. Kannan lost to his one-time protege K. Lakshminarayanan of the Congress in the Raj Bhavan constituency.

Mr. Kannan started his political career as Youth Congress leader. In 1985, he was elected to the Puducherry Assembly from the Cassicade constituency on Congress ticket and became the Health Minister. He was the Speaker of Puducherry Legislative Assembly between 1991 and 1996.

In 1996, he left the party to join the TMC in Puducherry, which he headed. In 2001, he moved out to form the Puducherry Makkal Congress and in 2005 the Puducherry Munnetra Congress, but achieved very little. His return to the Congress was rewarded with a Rajya Sabha seat. He was a Rajya Sabha Member from 2009 till October 2015.
