Five days after a Beed resident allegedly threw his two-year-old son into a drain, the JJ Marg police on Tuesday arrested Kadir Khan in Nagpada. Khan (45) had tossed his son Kaif (2) into a drain between the Sandhurst Road and Byculla stations. He then called up his wife Samina and told her what he had done. The police had booked him for murder and sent teams to Beed and his relatives’ residence in Kalyan.
“We had circulated information about Khan, including his photograph, on WhatsApp among our informants. We also visited dargahs and mosques in the city, as he was in the habit of frequenting religious places. On Tuesday, we received a tip-off that a man resembling Khan had been spotted on Sofia Zuber Marg in Nagpada, and sent a team to the spot. Khan was picked up while he was walking towards the JJ Hospital,” said an officer with the JJ Marg police.
Khan was brought to the police station and arrested. He confessed to the crime, but the police are questioning him about the motive. “Khan seems to be disoriented and is responding with unclear statements to our questions on why he killed Kaif,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Manoj Kumar Sharma, Zone I.
The police have found out that he was depressed over some property-related problems with his relatives in Beed, and had been undergoing psychiatric treatment. He had recently moved to Mumbai with his wife and five children, and was staying at his sister’s place in Nagpada.
