Adding to its solar energy generation capacity, Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (MIAL) has announced the commissioning of additional solar power of 410 kWp inside the airport premises.
The solar panels, spread across five locations at the T2 and Cargo terminals, have been positioned on rooftops for optimum utilisation of space. Until now, the airport was generating 650 kWp of solar power. With the additional installation, the capacity has now increased to a total output of 1,060 kWp.
The next phase of the solar project will include plant installations of 1,700 kWp. The capacity is anticipated to be further increased to 6,400 kWp by 2017, MIAL said.
With over 40 million travellers using it annually, Mumbai Airport handles the highest number of passengers per acre when compared to other airports in the country. It has set itself a target of carbon emission reduction by 1,330 tons per annum and plans to generate 16.24 lakh units of electricity per year through solar energy.
