Sena brings NMC to counter BJP rhetoric on transparency

MUMBAI: At a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attempts to corner the Shiv Sena on transparency in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the latter seems to be targeting the functioning of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), under whose jurisdiction the residence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis falls.

“The CM claimed that we do not believe in transparency in governance. On the contrary, the CM’s government is opaque. It is still unclear how did the BJP prove its majority in the House while it was in minority (after the 2014 Assembly polls). Where did the transparency go then?” asked Sena MLC Anil Parab on Monday.

“This government, from its roots, is not transparent. When they talk about transparency in the BMC, they should adhere to the same standard elsewhere in the State and at the Centre.” Mr. Parab claimed that in Nagpur, there are serious issues like water, bad roads, and an increase in crime rate.

“There is corruption involving cement contractors in Nagpur. The city is set to have roads worth ₹4,500 crore and the cement required for those will be coming from one company. Even the commission per a bag of cement is fixed.” Mr. Parab said the Nagpur corporation has faced a tar scam of thousands of crores of rupees. “I have called for an inquiry many times but no action has been taken. The commissioner has not even replied to my queries. We will be bringing a no confidence motion against him in the upcoming legislature session.”

The BJP has rebutted all corruption charges. “These false charges are nothing but an attempt to sweep the failure of the BMC under the carpet. The Sena has been partner in power. But while awarding the projects, it never objected,” said NMC mayor and BJP MLC Anil Sole.
