Mumbai: The Thane rural police on Tuesday arrested a 22-year-old Dahisar resident in connection with the murder of a woman and her daughter in Bhayander four days ago.
Dipika Sanghvi (29) and her daughter, Hetvi (8), were found dead at their residence in the Golden Nest complex on January 28.
According to the police, the accused, Vinayak Apur, is a former colleague of Dipika. He had been in a relationship with her for eight months, after Dipika separated from her husband, Kartik.
The police said CCTV camera footage showed Apur leaving the Sanghvi residence two days before the bodies were discovered. “Investigations indicated that Apur was a regular visitor to their residence. With the help of informants, we identified the suspect as Apur and sent a team to his residence. He had left home on the evening of January 28 without telling his parents anything,” said Superintendent of Police Mahesh Patil, Thane rural police.
On Tuesday, a friend of Apur told the police that he was on his way home. The police picked up Apur in Dahisar. During questioning, Apur allegedly confessed to have killed Dipika and Hetvi.
“Dipika’s husband, after their separation, used to give her ₹7,000 a month for expenses. She would ask Apur for money, which would give rise to frequent fights between them. A similar argument took place on January 26, and Apur strangled Dipika to death. Hetvi, who was asleep in the next room, woke up and saw Apur kill Dipika, after which he strangled her as well,” said an officer with the Navghar police.
