Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) candidate in the Vadakara Assembly constituency K.K. Rema, wife of the slain party leader T.P. Chandrasekharan, says the Left parties have failed to act as an effective Opposition in the past five years.

“There is virtually no Opposition to take up any issues concerning the people. All that the CPI(M) did was raking up controversies involving the solar scam and these agitations fizzed out after some publicity stunt,” she told The Hindu here on Tuesday.

Both the Congress-led UDF and the CPI(M)-led LDF are no different when it comes to tackling corruption. Regarding the proposal for a CBI inquiry into the larger conspiracy in the murder of Chandrasekharan, she said the UDF government and the BJP-led NDA at the Centre had not taken any positive steps to initiate the probe.

“The Congress-led UPA had been in power, but it did nothing. Similarly, the BJP government has also been sitting on the file for the past two years. Its indecision only seems to have benefited the CPI(M) which wants to sabotage the inquiry,” she said.

“From nowhere I have got justice,” Ms. Rema said and added that her candidature at Vadakara was a fight against the murder politics of the CPI(M),” she said.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken that an aspirant for the Chief Minister’s post from the CPI(M) was an accused in a murder case. However, the BJP also encouraged the politics of violence. Its leaders should also think whether they had any right to speak against violence,” Ms. Rema said.

The RMP, which is contesting in 10 seats, had formed an alliance with two minor parties in the State.

Contesting to win

“We are contesting to win the polls. It is the CPI(M)’s propaganda to show the RMP in poor light and allege that it is in alliance with the Indian Muslim Union League at Vadakara and Kuttiyadi. Its leaders are capable of doing any mean tricks. At Vadakara, the contest is between the UDF and the RMP and we have put up a candidate at Kuttiyadi,” Ms. Rema said.
