Yet another endosulfan victim, a youth who had been undergoing prolonged treatment for complex diseases, passed away after bearing unbearable pain owing to crippling diseases.
Balakrishna, 27, son of Battya Naik, hailing from Vaninagar locality in the endosulfan-hit village of Enmakaje, succumbed to his diseases at the Pariyaram Medical College hospital on Saturday, reliable sources said.
Despite being bedridden after his hands and legs got paralysed right from birth, Balakrishna had to undergo a life of trauma with his stomach eventually growing out of proportion. He did not find himself included in the official endosulfan victims’ list until former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy visited his house in the nearby Madhur panchayat in 2013, they said.
Tough time
The delay in including him in the official list drove the family to spending huge amounts of money for expert medical treatment and they had to shift from Vaninagar to Madhur panchayat, near here.
His distressed mother Lakshmi had to run from pillar to post to meet the mounting medical expense after his father Battia Naik passed away in early 2000.
Undiagnosed illnesses
The youth was shifted to the Pariyaram Medical College Hospital after his stomach began to grow abnormally big owing to undiagnosed diseases attributed to the indiscriminate aerial spraying of the pesticide in the State-owned cashew estates in the Enmakaje village.
The body of the youth was laid to rest at his residence late on Saturday night, they added.
As many as 10 endosulfan victims had lost their lives over the past seven months in the district.
