PMK founder S. Ramadoss has criticised the recent decision of the Union Public Service Commission to invoke the creamy layer concept to treat 120 candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBC) as “general” category candidates. As per the creamy layer concept, OBC candidates whose annual parental income is above Rs. 6 lakh are denied the benefit of reservation.
In a statement, Dr. Ramadoss said these OBC candidates had appeared for the civil services examination last year after submitting their community certificates. They were treated as OBC candidates until they qualified for the main interview. However, when the final selection list was made, they were included in the general category and denied the benefit of communal reservation.
Contending that this amounted to social injustice, he asked, “Who gave them the authority to decide that family income of the 120 candidates was above Rs 6 lakh.”
Demanding that these candidates be considered as OBCs, he called for abolishing the creamy layer concept.
