Party functionary hacked to death

September 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 28, 2016 03:29 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Raja (37), district functionary of Puratchi Bharatham, was hacked to death near his home in Old Perungalathur, on Friday morning.

The brutal murder, suspected to be the fallout of previous enmity, triggered angry reactions from party activists who sought action against the assailants. St. Thomas Mount District police said four men armed with knives came in a car to an eatery on Kamrajar Salai, where the victim used to take his breakfast and overpowered him while he was eating, hacking him to death.

A resident of Town Panchayat Road, Raja was involved in real estate business and a few months ago, he was arrested by police for attacking another man of the same locality due to a family feud. Police said the murder may be a fallout of that incident and a case has been registered by Peerkankaranai police. The body was removed to Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital for postmortem and was handed over to family members later in the evening.

Edwin Sudhakar, Tambaram town secretary of the party, said the security for Dalits has been on the decline now and this is not the first time Dalit leaders are being targeted and he urged for speedy action by the police to apprehend the assailants.

Tension prevailed for sometime in the morning and the heavy crowds surged at the house of the victim. Due to this heavy police security has been provided in the entire locality. “We have specific clues on the assailants involved in this brutal murder and five special police teams have been formed to nab the culprits,” said an investigating official.
