At the mention of his name, Cheran, a fawn-coloured Labrador, comes bounding out of kennel no. 6 at ‘Marudham,’ the headquarters of the Tamil Nadu Commando Force.
The policemen attached to the dog squad here will soon miss Cheran. For, this canine, a favourite among policemen, will have a new home. The dog will be given to someone who bids the highest for him.
The male dog, which weighs 35 kg, and has brown eyes that sparkle with naughtiness, was born on June 30, 2013. It has been certified by the Kennel Club of India (KCI).
“Usually, dogs are purchased from outside and we train them once they are six months old. However, we found that Cheran was not fit for the rigours of police duty. Otherwise, he is fine and fit to be kept at a house. Therefore, we decided to find him a home through an auction that will be held on March 4,” said a police officer from the dog squad of the commando force.
Cheran has been trained to conduct himself well. “Cheran will not urinate or defecate inside the house; when called, he will respond immediately; and he will not damage household articles. We can guarantee that he is an extremely obedient dog. We will give Cheran to the highest bidder,” the officer said.
As on date, there are 19 dogs with the commando force comprising Labradors, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers.
However, when the dogs are given away, the handlers undergo a great deal of emotional pain.
“We regularly visit the house of the person who gets the dog until the canine gets familiar with them. We also give them tips on how to maintain the dog,” said another officer.
The bidding will take place on March 4, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the office of the Additional Director General of Police ,Operations, Marutham Complex, No.17, Boat Club Road, R.A. Puram, Chennai-28.
