Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday alleged that a lack of security monitoring mechanism and the State government’s failure to fill the 300 vacancies in the Railway Protection Force (RPF) resulted in the daylight murder of Infosys employee Swathi (24) at the Nungambakkam railway station last week.
“Swathi’s cries for help fell on deaf ears. She lay like an orphan for hours in the railway station,” Mr. Karunanidhi said in a statement here.
The DMK leader also condemned the police and said that instead of concentrating only on providing security to those in power and monitoring the activities of the Opposition parties, the Police Department should take steps to protect the public.
Mr. Karunanidhi alleged that the government spent several crores of rupees for unnecessary projects that did not benefit the people. “If the government had fixed closed circuit television cameras in schools, colleges, railway stations, bus stands, commercial complexes and beaches, it would have benefitted people,” he contended.
