With elections round the corner in Bihar and coming up in Tamil Nadu, the Indian Union Muslim League has decided to up the ante against the Sangh Parivar organisations and the BJP-led Union government.
At a national executive meeting held in Chennai, E. Ahamed, president of IUML, said, “We will go along with the secular and democratic parties in the Bihar elections although we haven’t concluded our talks with Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar. In Tamil Nadu, the alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will continue. Only they can defeat the AIADMK.”
On the performance of the AIADMK government , K.M. Kader Mohideen, IUML general secretary, said the government was “undemocratic” in the way it conducted business inside the Assembly. “We must debate and discuss issues in the Assembly. This is not happening now,” he said.
A set of nine major resolutions were adopted to counter what he described as a “concerted effort by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and BJP to destroy India’s secular fabric.” The IUML, in an effort to safeguard rights of the minorities, would launch a 10-million signature campaign to urge the President to remove Article 44 from Indian Constitution which calls for a ‘uniform civil code.’
“After listening to detailed arguments, Rajiv Gandhi had said that if women in the country came to know of the rights enshrined in Sharia law, everybody would want it. This is the reason why the Sangh Parivar keeps bringing up the issue of uniform civil code again and again,” Mr. Kader Mohideen said.
He also condemned the “concerted efforts” by the RSS to define every Indian as if they are ‘Hindus’ despite a clear Presidential Order terming Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis as religious minorities.
