IT engineer Sharanya Ari secured the seventh rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2015.

“Though I had an opportunity to fly abroad, my parents wanted me to join civil services,” said Ms. Sharanya.

Her father M. Arivazhagan, retired Air Force officer, motivated her to serve the nation by joining the Indian Administrative Service. Her mother J. Sathya Priya, a teacher at Government Girls Higher Secondary School in East Tambaram, assisted her in preparing for optional subject of sociology.

“It is my fourth attempt. It is a long-time dream of my parents. After failure, picking yourself up and motivating yourself is the most challenging part in civil services exam. Unless you have family support, you will not be successful,” said Ms. Sharanya.

After completing B.Tech (IT) from SRM University in 2011, she started preparation for the examination at coaching institutes such as Manithaneyam Free IAS Academy and All India Civil Services Coaching Centre.

R. Vaithinathan (rank 37) secured the second place among successful candidates from Tamil Nadu. After completing MBBS, he started preparation at coaching institutes such as T.I.M.E. in Chennai. Candidates such as Elambahavath K (rank 117) and S. Saravanan (rank 366) who wrote the examination in Tamil have emerged successful.

“Hard working candidates who write the exam in Tamil will be able to secure high rank. I studied in a government school in my native village. My optional subject was Tamil literature. I wrote the exam in Tamil and answered the interview in Tamil,” said Mr. Saravanan, a resident of Mylambadi village in Erode district. Mr. Saravanan has completed Aeronautical Engineering from MIT Chennai.

According to a press release from Manithaneyam Free IAS Academy director Karthikeyan, a total of 46 candidates, including Ms. Sharanya, have emerged successful. According to a release from All India Civil Services Coaching Centre, a State-run institution, 42 of its candidates were selected for IAS / IPS and other services by the UPSC.

“Candidates from other States continue to be attracted to Chennai for preparation. Of the 16 successful candidates, two are from other States,” said R. Sathya, director, Sathya IAS Academy.
