A cow which strayed on to the main road claimed the life of a motorist who was on his way to Selaiyur on Velachery Main Road on Tuesday.
Police identified the victim as R. Vijayaraj (22) of MGR Nagar, Kovilampakkam, who was running a mechanic shop in Santhoshapuram. He was approaching Rajakilpakkam intersection on his two-wheeler, when the cow suddenly appreared on the main road.
He reportedly applied the brakes immeditaly to avoid hitting the cow, but was knocked down by a school bus that was behind him.
In the impact, he was thrown off his two-wheeler and before medical help could arrive, he succumed to his injuries and died on the spot.
Chromepet traffic investigation wing police registered a case and arrested the bus driver N. R. Paulraj (45) of Mannivakkam in connection with the accident.
Stray cattle menace
Residents who gathered at the accident spot charged that stray cattle menace had reached alarming proportions. With cows making the roads their home, vehicular traffic has been severely affected on stretches including Velachery Main Road and Medavakkam Main Road in the southern suburbs. Besides traffic snarls, it is also leading to a large number of accidents, they said.
