The work on footpaths on both sides of Velachery Main Road is likely to be completed in about a month. Right now, work on improving the footpath on the stretch from Madras Christian College (MCC) — near the Poondi Bazaar point — to IAF Station Road is under way.
A senior official of the Highways Department said this infrastructure work had been taken up a couple of months ago. The road had been widened to the maximum width on this stretch and widening of other stretches of the road would be taken up in a phased manner. This work includes laying of two-metre wide granite footpaths on both sides of the road for a length of one km.
S. Sriraman, a resident of Thirumangai Mannan Street in East Tambaram, said the road adjacent to the MCC was very useful for pedestrians. However, they complained about parking of buses and commercial vehicles by private operators, which, they said, helped antisocial elements take over the spot.
The State Highways Department is now constructing a footpath.
Residents of IAF Road and Bharatha Matha Street in East Tambaram have urged the traffic police to put an end to illegal parking of vehicles so that the new infrastructure facilities could benefit the pedestrians.
