Five persons, including a juvenile, have been arrested by the police for the murder of 35-year-old man Nageshwar Rao, on Thursday.

Vijayakumar (42) and his sons, Abhishek (20) and a 16-year-old, and Vijayakumar’s two cousins Mari and Nagaraj were allegedly involved in a brawl with a real estate businessman, Rajesh, during a birthday party in Saligramam on Wednesday night.

Nageshwar Rao, a resident of Vadapalani and a friend of Rajesh, intervened but was severely injured in the brawl. Later, he died on the way to hospital.

According to the police, Vijayakumar ran a printing press in Vadapalani, and Rajesh, his friend, would often visit him. Rajesh began an affair with Vijaykumar’s wife Kausalya (35) and the two eloped a month ago.

Vijayakumar subsequently lodged a complaint with the Vadapalani police on May 18. On Wednesday night, Rajesh and Vijayakumar bumped into each other at the party and a heated argument broke out.

When Nageshwar Rao intervened, Vijayakumar, along with his sons and cousins, started pelting stones at both Rajesh and Nageshwar Rao.

“The juvenile and his brother hit Nageshwar on the head injuring him severely. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to a hospital,” said the officer.
