The first Amma theatres may finally be commissioned in Shenoy Nagar and T. Nagar soon.

As a first step, the civic body is planning to redevelop Amma Arangam, the modern auditorium in Shenoy Nagar into an Amma theatre. The Corporation is planning to redevelop the Pitti Thyagaraya Arangam in T. Nagar as an Amma theatre too. A final call on this is expected to be taken on Saturday. The existing auditorium at Shenoy Nagar was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 17.28 crore. Even after the development of the Amma Theatre in Shenoy Nagar, the building will also be used for organising important public functions.

The new Amma Theatre could be commissioned in a few days in Shenoy Nagar. Electrical works and acoustics have already been completed in the auditorium.

Ticket prices

A decision on ticket prices is expected to be taken by the State government shortly.

In addition to redevelopment of existing buildings, the Greater Chennai Corporation has identified lands of line agencies such as Tamil Nadu Housing Board for the construction of Amma Theatres. The civic body has identified 3.94 acres of land in Mogappair East near Padi for development of an Amma Theatre.

According to official sources, construction of buildings for Amma Theatres is likely to be taken up in other parts of the city only after commissioning the facilities in Shenoy Nagar and T.Nagar.

Some of the AMMAA markets will also share space with Amma theatres.
