May 05, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - CHENNAI:

The city was spared on day one of the peak summer season on Wednesday.

The period between May 4 and May 28 is considered the hottest time of the year and is, according to the Tamil calendar, called agninakshatram or kathri . On Wednesday, the day temperature stayed close to normal in the city and suburbs. The weather observatories in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 36.6 degree Celsius and 38.2 degree Celsius, which is within one degree Celsius above average for the season. Officials of the Meteorological department said the presence of cool easterly winds were among the factors preventing the temperature from soaring. The department also forecast that the city would experience a partly cloudy sky and the maximum temperature would be around 37 degree Celsius for the next two days.

However, there was not much possibility of thundershowers till Friday. Nights will continue to be hot as the minimum temperature will hover around 29 degree Celsius, two degrees above normal.
