Motorists plying the Paranur toll plaza near Chengalpattu do not need to provide their contact numbers to the persons manning the toll, anymore.
This follows a decision of the Madras High Court to delete a portion of its own order which directed vehicle users to furnish phone numbers at the plaza.
It had passed interim orders on a public interest litigation petition that said the toll plaza was illegal as it had been established at a five-km distance from Chengalpattu town.
Last month, a Vacation Bench, comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and K. Ravichandrabaabu, while permitting the collection of toll fee at the plaza, said the money should be deposited in a separate account and the contact numbers of motorists should be noted down.
This was so, in the event the writ petition was allowed, the fee collected from the users could be returned to them.
However, on Wednesday, the National Highways Authority of India, in an additional counter, requested the court to remove the provision that phone numbers be recorded, as vehicles were queuing up at the plaza and many motorists were refusing to furnish their contact details.
When the matter came up before the First Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Satish K. Agnihotri and Justice M. M. Sundresh, the Bench directed the portion of the order be deleted. The next hearing in the case has been posted to July 3.
