The Chennai Corporation has finalised the alignment for the proposed Integrated Traffic Infrastructure Development Plan connecting Ega Theatre junction, on Poonamallee High Road, and Thirumalai Pillai Road.

The Rs. 800-crore project is expected to ease congestion in areas such as Nungambakkam, Egmore, T. Nagar and Kilpauk.

At a recent meeting, the Corporation decided to complete the mega project in phases. The civic body will start construction of a portion of the 3.3-km-long structure to ease traffic congestion near Valluvarkottam. In the first phase, a structure, comprising two flyovers, with a double trumpet design will be constructed at Valluvar Kottam junction at an estimated cost of Rs. 120 crore. The design includes one trumpet at the Chennai Corporation Park opposite Valluvar Kottam and another trumpet at the water pumping station.

A four-lane flyover, extending around 550 metre, will start near Independence Park junction. Vehicles turning from Valluvarkottam High Road to Kodambakkam, from Valluvarkottam High Road to T. Nagar, and from Anna Salai to Valluvarkottam High Road will be able to take the elevated route.

Another 450-metre-long, three-lane flyover will start near Habibullah Road on Thirumalai Pillai Road, permitting motorists proceeding from T. Nagar to Valluvarkottam High Road, from Kodambakkam to T. Nagar and from T. Nagar to Anna Salai to use the structure.

The complete elevated stretch will extend over five traffic bottlenecks — Chetpet junction, Sterling Road junction, Nungambakkam High Road junction, Tank Bund Road junction and Valluvar Kottam High Road-Kodambakkam High Road junction.

The structure will include three interchanges, designed like a trumpet, at Sterling Road-College Road junction, Valluvarkottam High Road-Kodambakkam High Road junction and Ega Theatre junction.

“Public consultation for the project will be conducted in a few days,” said an official.

The decision to complete the project in phases has been taken owing to postponement of the finalisation of CMRL alignment for phase-III. The highways department is also planning to construct an elevated road along Poonamallee High Road that is likely to have an impact on the project.
