Emphasising the need for more researchers, M.M. Murugappan, Vice-Chairman of the Murugappa Group, said that with the spending on research and development increasing, there will be a greater demand for researchers.
Currently, 0.9 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product is being spent on research, but it is expected that this amount will increase to around 2 per cent. This increase in spending will mean an increase in the number of jobs as well, he said, while delivering the T.S. Narayanaswami Memorial Endowment Lecture on ‘An industry perspective on engineering, education and research in India’ recently.
In this regard, the private sector should engage in enhancing research in various fields. Industry should also engage with academia and researchers, he added.
