The Tiruvallur District Police have written to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board seeking details on the quantum of oil that had spilled in the sea and the damage to environment.
As part of its investigation into the collision of two fuel-laden ships off Kamarajar Port Ltd. in Ennore and the resultant oil spill on January 28, the district police have been conducting inquiries into the incident.
Based on the complaint given by A.K. Gupta, general manager, Kamarajar Port Ltd, the Minjur police last week registered a case under Sections 280 (rash navigation of vessel), 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) and 431 (mischief by injury to public road, bridge, river or channel) of the Indian Penal Code.
Following the registration of the case, Ponneri DSP K. Kannan conducted an investigation with the crew of two ships.
Mr. Kannan told The Hindu : “We have issued summons to the chief engineers, captains and the signal man of the port. We have completed our investigation with the crew members of one of the ships — M T Dawn Kanchipuram — and will also interrogate those of the MT Maple. Our investigation is to find out whose fault it was.”
