With the price of cooking gas revised from Sunday, consumers are worried about the upward trend in LPG prices.
The price of a non-subsidised cylinder, which was was Rs. 560 in June 2016 in Chennai, is now Rs. 594.50. The subsidy component per cylinder is Rs. 172.29.
“Though the increase per cylinder, when compared to last month, is only Rs. 1.50, the price has gradually increased by Rs. 34.50 in the past six months. For a normal household, this will be difficult to bear, especially in this cashless situation,” said L. Umadevi, a homemaker.
While those in cities find it difficult to digest the hike, people in rural areas say they find it very difficult to purchase refills.
Kumaresan, a farmer in Villupuram, said his wife had asked him to collect firewood for their stove as they cannot afford the cylinder’s price.
“Usually in winter, the price of LPG goes up since there is higher demand and it again comes down by February or March. It is likely that LPG prices will come down in a couple of months,” explained an oil industry source.
