Burglars took away gold jewellery and other valuables kept in the lockers of the United Bank of India in Mylapore recently.

The United Bank of India branch functions on the ground floor of the building belonging to Ramakrishna Math. The bank had been closed for four days because of Pongal holidays. When it was reopened on Wednesday, the staff were shocked to see the lockers open. Immediately, they alerted the Mylapore police.

The police suspect that the burglars might have entered the bank after breaking open the window adjacent to the playground of P.S. Higher Secondary School behind the building.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the burglars broke the window by using a gas-cutter. Only three lockers were opened.

Because of time constraint, they could not open more lockers.

Joint Commissioner of Police P. Manoharan and Deputy Commissioner of Police V. Balakrishnan inspected the spot.
