The Peenya police have arrested a 32-year-old woman who, along with her paramour, bludgeoned her eight-year-old daughter to death.

The accused Rekha Mondal, a garment-factory employee and her paramour Bidyuth Mondal have been arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

According to the police, Rekha's husband Dinesh Mondal seprated from her after coming to know of her extra marital affair with Bidyuth.

Since then Rekha and her daughter Babli were living in a rented house in Shivapura, where Bidyuth would visit her. According to the police, Babli would repeatedly ask to meet her father, and Bidyuth would beat her when she did so.

On Sunday, Rekha got agitated and hit Babli with a wooden piece.

Babli sustained a severe head injury and became unconcious. According to the police, Bidyuth took a plastic rope and strangled her to death.

In order to conceal her crime, Rekha tried to cook up a story stating Babli fell in the drain and died of head injuries and tried to cremeate the body in a hurry. Suspecting something fishy, the nieghbours informed the police, who detained Rekha and shifted Babli's body for post-mortem.

Meanwhile the police contacted Babli's school, and came to know that Babli was often hit by her mother and would come to school bearing injuries. One of the school teachers, who noticed Babli crying, spotted injury marks on her body. "They had even visited Rekha and warned her against thrashing the child. The child was being assaulted for the last one-and-a-half years,” said an investigating officer.

Following this, the police took Rekha into custody and a detailed questioning led her to confess to the crime. Based on the confession, the police arrested Bidyuth and the duo have been booked on charge of murder and remanded in judicial custody.

The post mortem report also confirmed that the death was due to a severe blow on the head, followed by strangulation.
